High Velocity Clouds: the Missing Link?

چکیده
Hierarchical structure formation models predict the existence of large numbers of low velocity dispersion dark halos. Galaxy surveys find far fewer galaxies than predicted by analytical estimates and numerical simulations. In this paper, we suggest that these dark halos are not missing, but have been merely misplaced in the galactic astronomy section of the journals: they are the High Velocity Clouds (HVCs). We review the predictions of our model for the Local Group origin of the HVCs and its implications for the formation and the evolution of our Galaxy. We describe recent observations that confirm many of earlier predictions and discuss future tests of the model. 1. The Missing Galaxy Problem A generic prediction of hierarchical structure formation models is the existence of large numbers of low mass halos. The Press-Schechter formalism (Press & Schechter 1974) predicts that the galaxy mass function, n(M) ∝ M exp(−M/M∗) (1) has a steep faint end slope, α ≃ −2. Numerical simulations (Efstathiou et al. 1988; Gelb & Bertschinger 1994, Klypin et al. 1999) are consistent with the Press-Schechter approach: they also predict copious low mass halos.

A “missing” Supernova Remnant Revealed by the 21-cm Line of Atomic Hydrogen
Although some 20–30,000 supernova remnants (SNRs) are expected to exist in the Milky Way, only about 230 are presently known. This implies that most SNRs are “missing”. Recently, we proposed that small ( < ∼ 1 ), faint, high-velocity features seen in large-scale 21-cm line surveys of atomic hydrogen (Hi) in the Galactic plane could be examples of such missing old SNRs. Here we report on high-re...

We present a comparison of the leftover satellites at z=0 in a cold dark matter dominated simulation of the formation of the Local Group to the distribution of observed neutral hydrogen high-velocity clouds and compact high-velocity clouds. The ∼2000 leftover satellites in the simulation have dark matter masses which range between 0.5 to 10 × 10 9 M ⊙ , sizes between 3 to 30 kpc, and distances ...
متن کاملFirst Results from the Parkes Multibeam High-velocity Cloud Survey
With the onset of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), a new view of the high-velocity cloud (HVC) distribution in the southern sky is being revealed. The dense spatial sampling and unbiased coverage of HIPASS gives it multiple advantages over previous surveys of the southern sky. Detailed views of the clouds’ structure and large mosaics of the HI sky allow us to link individual concentration...

THE CHEMICAL AND IONIZATION CONDITIONS IN WEAK Mg ii ABSORBERS
We present an analysis of the chemical and ionization conditions in a sample of 100 weak Mg ii absorbers identified in the VLT/UVES archive of quasar spectra. In addition to Mg ii, we present equivalent width and column density measurements of other low ionization species such as Mg i, Fe ii, Al ii, C ii, Si ii and also Al iii. We find that the column densities of C ii and Si ii are strongly co...
